Who’s afraid of the system skirt?

posted in General musings, In-depth |

I have not been shy about saying how much I still like a good system skirt - and I know I’m not alone here given how many people like the designs from Savvy?, Ingenue, Shai, and others - shops that still use system skirts regularly. I commented a short time ago on Aradia Dielli’s blog on how I also sometimes prefer to de-prim a bit and sport a sleeker skirt (or coat). A good, simple system skirt is still a staple (alliteration anyone?) when done well :)

More on using system skirts with Ingenue, Shai, Pin Up Dolls, Savvy?, Last Call … after the cut

First it’s the “Pencil Skirts” from Ingenue and the pencil skirt that comes with the “Secretary Blouses” from Casa del Shai. Aradia was wearing the blouse last night so I ran over to pick them up because, well, look at them. Inside the pack I also found the skirt, which changed my original post from a retro round-up to a system skirt summary. The two on the left are the Shai skirt and on the right, the orange (!!!!! yay) pencil skirt from Betty Doyle. The hat is “Gillian’s bunny” hat from Chapeau tres Mignon and shoes, the “Gwyneth” sculpted pumps in black from Tesla.

All Ingenue skirts below, this time with the skirt top added and paired with the top from one of my favorite pieces from Last Call - the “Marguerite” dress. There’s the bunny again and the very cool “Lagerfeld” boots, also from Chapeau tres Mignon. The bracelet is from Bonita Popinjay.

Next are new tops from Pin Up Dolls (Pin Upshaw) that come with the “Tatts and Cherries” outfits released recently. I adore the fun tops, which actually come as full outfits with flexi skirts and bases. Pin does super retro-inspired fashions that you should definitely check out. The shoes are all Tesla - the “Madonna” sculpted pumps in great colors. The necklace on the right is from the Lycee Feeling shop called, the “Koo Silver necklace.” The original one had bling but you can get one without by messaging the designer. The pearls on the left also come with Shai’s blouses.

Lastly, in case you’re still on the fence, are two older outfits: the “Closer Than Thou” and “Soni” outfits from Shai and Savvy? respectively. I could have done a bunch more snaps of other system skirt outfits that I own, but I think these are two great examples of full outfits, completely based on the system skirt, that I still really love. The shoes with Soni are from Boing Fromage, as are the new “heart bangles.”

I love you Gillian for giving me things to match my ingenue skirts!! System skirts are a pain in the ass to mix and match at the best of times, and high waist was just a pain! I had some options but I loove those. :D

I think I’d be a fan of system skirts if I could figure out my skirt shape in a way that made me happy. It might just be because of my thickness setting, but reducing my butt creates a weird bulge on my back that drives me crazy. I’ll keep working on it though because these outfits look great. I never have enough retro in my inventory. :)

    Antie Hi5!

Brandy - I know what you mean, but maybe don’t reduce the butt? I know it’s a little hard to get used to at first though. I love your avatar.

i dont like system skirts becuase my shape is unfortunely NO MOD so i cant use a skirt shape. it is a shame. i bought the shape as a clueless noob and now it stuck. these look great though. i do wear a couple of system skirts from paper couture, there is enough going on to distract from the ass. that smear in the middle is wierd though, designing for it is a pain in the ass.

Wow Gillian - Great job on this piece, I truly love the way you paired Betty Doyle’s fabulous pencil skirts with peices from some great established lines as well as Pin Upshaw’s cute tops… really gives me some ideas on how to extend my wardrobe!

I love the system skirt, when done right, as it is here; but I cannot wear them. I refuse to have a flat, shapeless butt. I also refuse to look like I’m smuggling a pumpkin when viewed from behind. Real women have asses, LL forgot that when they designed a clothing mesh that worships long and lanky proportions. Thankfully, creative designers developed the prim skirt (then flexi, and so on). These are much more respectful to the callipygian goddesses among us.

Mayhaps, Choice. I still like the system skirts for their simplicity though sure, flexi skirts are of course much more modern in SL. The butt thing doesn’t bother me - I don’t have much of a butt in RL either so I can live with no butt in SL from time to time too ;) Thanks for commenting.

What I love about system skirts (apart from the fact that my RL wardrobe is full of pencil skirts) is that they’re one size fits all. With previous prim-skirt releases I’ve had IMs from people to tell me that I’ve made the pants too long for the skirt. Sometimes ladies get a little too enthusiastic with their leg sliders (I was guilty of it for my first couple of weeks in game) so the texture pants ends up longer than the prim skirt and the prims need to be individually lengthened. But with the system skirts people can play around with disproportion and the skirts will still fit them perfectly. :)

You look beautiful as per usual Gillian, now I have to run and grab all I can find from Pin Up Dolls, those outfits are fantastic! I agree with the system skirt, they can still work an outfit when done right, as quite a few designers do.

Choice, you don’t have to wear your skirt shape all the time - just throw it on when you change into a system skirt and go back to your regular shape when you go into pants.

I love system skirts but you already knew that haha. You look beautiful and I’m glad you like those blouses, they are sexy and very classy! *hugs*

I am glad so many people commented to say how much they *do* like system skirts :) Dakota has a great point about fit that I actually hadn’t considered. Tenshi - you’re right, I didn’t mention PC and I should have though I can’t think of something I personally own from there that’s all system skirt. And Hethr, I know what you meant ;) I am going to bed!
